- University of Tennessee Intramural Sports Fields
Southern Constructors, Inc. began the project by moving over 200,000 CY of soil on the 38 acre site to provide level areas for the multi-purpose athletic fields. The project consists of synthetic and natural turf multi-purpose fields, softball fields, NCAA regulation sand volley ball courts, a Maintenance Facility and Central Complex building serving as the main hub of the facility. The project incorporated several green initiatives including the use of native grasses and wildflowers to reduce mowing requirements, LED lighting to reduce power consumption and the capture and reuse of storm water for irrigation purposes. Over 20 mature existing trees were protected and incorporated into the landscaping as well as faux stone retaining wall and walking trails connecting to the City of Knoxville’s Greenway Trail system. Innovative fielding lighting was used to reduce light bleed-over into the surrounding neighborhoods and safety systems were installed for the protection of the participants including access control, video detection and lightning detection.
- University of Tennessee Steam Plant Conversion to Natural Gas
Southern Constructors, Inc. began construction in January, 2014 to replace coal-fired boilers #2 and #3 with natural gas-fired/fuel oil-fired package boilers and demolish the plant’s coal handling equipment, coal shed, ash handling equipment and 300’ tall brick stack. The project provided upgrades to plant control system and electrical upgrades to interface with new boilers and components for future power generation equipment. Additional aboveground fuel oil storage tanks with concrete containment dike was included in our scope of work. A new bulk brine maker, boiler circulation pumping system (to circulate boiler water thru off-line boilers), a new dealkalizer and upgrades to existing water softener controls. SCI is proud to be a partner in constructing an ecological friendly source of energy for the University of Tennessee.
- HESLER BIOLOGY BUILDING RENOVATION & MASONRY REPAIR PHASE II
Complete interior renovation and exterior masonry repairs that entailed brick cleaning, repairing, tuck pointing, precast belts and cornices, precast coping surrounding new installed aluminum windows. Complete interior upgrades with a unique interior stone facing and epoxy based flooring. Specialties incorporated into the new laboratories were marker boards, lockers, projection screens, monitor mounts, ice machines, laboratory casework and locking dock equipment. Distinctive mechanical features included deionized and domestic systems, hydronic piping and pump system, environmental chambers, dedicated waste and vent systems for laboratory usage. Unique electrical items were lighting control system, data wiring facility, floor boxes, and area of rescue two way communication systems.
- SEVIER AMBULANCE DISPATCH CENTER
New construction of a state of the art ambulance and dispatch center that include design features that can accommodate EMT staff and short term patient care. Building sets on a concrete slab with large coiling doors to allow easy access for ambulance access. Motion sensors have been installed on lights and doors to provide a hand-free access for on-site personnel. Custom casework was installed to house all medical and non-medical supplies needed by staff members
- JACOB BUILDING
Jacob Building was a renovation project that included complete mechanical and HVAC upgrades, polished concrete floors, window and elevator improvements and other interior finishes. The exterior of the building was encased by using a thick brick veneer. The Jacob Building’s functionality was improved for the general public with the addition of air conditioning to this public facility.
- SHERRI PARKER LEE STADIUM
Southern Constructors, Inc was proud to construct the new facility and stadium for the University of Tennessee Lady Vols Softball Team. This new construction encompasses a team building, batting cages, training and film review areas, stadium seating, box seats for supporters, and state of the art broadcasting links for local and national media coverage.
- JOHN MARSHALL SPEC BUILDING
John Marshall Spec Building was an existing metal building erected without the interior finishes. The building was complete with all interior finishes plus an addition of dock equipment in order to meet the owner’s needs. By negotiating with the owner, SCI performed the work within budget and the timeframe to exceed their expectations.
- TENNESSEE SCHOOL FOR DEAF CLASSROOMS
Tennessee School for Deaf Classrooms received interior upgrades including drywall, acoustical ceiling, flooring, new windows, doors, casework, specialties boards and fire caulking. Outside improvements included roofing, masonry, paving and thick brick veneer that covers the exterior structure.
- UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HESS HALL IMPROVEMENTS
Over a two year period during during summer vacations, Hess Hall has received a complete inside and outside update. New courtyards and walkways have been added with updated masonry features to the exterior of the building. Dormitory rooms have received new interior finishes and furnishings to enhance their living quarters on the University of Tennessee Campus.
